One of the most important things to know about how to lower cholesterol is that it is never too early to start. Your quality of life as an adult whether you are 21 or 51 depends on your level of healthy living habits; from the foods you eat, the nutritional supplements you take and your exercise schedule. The earlier you begin to maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle the better, because the accumulation of cholesterol that causes chest pains, strokes and heart attacks is the result of many years of high cholesterol which leads to “plaque” buildup.

This term is used to describe a collection of excess cholesterol that the body has covered with scar tissue on artery walls. This condition comes from years of eating foods with a high saturated and/or trans fat content. The larger the buildups, the more of a health risk it presents. Angina is the result of large amounts of plaque, while smaller instances of plaque often breakup and enter the blood stream that can cause a blood clot to form. This creates a blockage in the artery that can lead to a heart attack. For individuals who are thinking about how to lower cholesterol, it’s essential to be aware of what plaque is and how it affects the functioning of the heart. The medical term for this condition is the buildup of plaque is “atherosclerosis.” In essence, when there is a lot of plaque on artery walls, they become narrower, restricting the flow of blood to the heart, cause it to malfunction.
